there is also energy expended that doesn't directly go to the material piece of art
one can scale that from nearly zero energy going to the piece of art (Duchamp) to moderate levels of energy going into the piece of art (Warhol)
to high levels of energy going to the piece of art (Pollock)

for very serious art you go to Pollock

a work of art can only be judged by its measure of genuiness

a work of function can also be judged by the same but we are not interested in that

a work of non-functionality can be directed by a genuine feeling in only some of its parts

(I must admit that that effort of genuinness can be at different levels, i.e. coming from different levels of the brains activities, the lower the more genuine)
